You can leave it longer to saponify and test with a PH Meter…

Actually, I found a site recently that had a lot of fats, hang on.

    Try: http://waltonfeed.com/old/soap/soaptabl.html

But if your fats aren’t there then you can only keep testing it to make sure the caustic soda has saponified.

WHEN THE EXPERIENCED SOAP BOILERS ARE ON TOP OF THE KETTLES LOOKING IN THEY CAN TELL BY THE MOVEMENT ,TEXTURE AND FEEL IF THEY HAVE THE MIX CORRECT.If modification to the mix is required they phone the lye room operators, to pump into a certain kettle ,lye from a certain lye tank,to adjust the mix, during this stage glycerine is taken off as well and pumped into the glycerine storage tanks. These men just know how much and when, they use no charts or tables ,just feel and experience. It takes many years to become a good soap boiler. The lye tanks are filled by the continual offtake from the kettles during the process. You could tell saponification had taken place just by looking at it and smelling it when you had been at it for a while. All soap is plain white when finished.

I worked for a year in the lye room pumping the lye washes etc and the glycerine plant.I used to bottle the pure glycerine,it was a wonderful soother for a sore throat, and adding honey made no difference to the taste.
