What chemical reactions happen when making soap?

In chemistry we made soap using NaOH, H2O, Borax, ammonia, and lard. I need to know what chemical reactions happened while making the soap. Also some of the questions are asking about ionic and covalent compounds in the soap.

well, the reaction is called saponification ( Hydrolysis of esters in the presence of strong soluable bases. ) – but the chemistry of it…

Well, maybe this will help: http://chemistry.about.com/library/weekly/blsapon.htm

If you search on "saponification" you will find dozens of sites
